A former Pentecostal preacher, Sam Kinison emerged in the mid 80's as one of the first Shock Comedians. Known for his primal scream, Sam's comedy included biting commentary on church scandals, homosexuals, the dating scene and women in general. A prominent member of the stand-up comedy circuit his rise to stardom began with his debut appearance on Late Night with David Letterman, who, in his introduction, warned "Brace yourselves. I'm not kidding."
In 1992, at the height of his career, he had remarried, honeymooned in Hawaii, and returned to open a tour with a sold out show at Riverside Casino, Nevada. While driving to the show with his new wife and a friend his Trans Am was struck head on when a half-ton driven by a 17 yr old who had been drinking pulled out to pass another vehicle. While initially shaken by the experience Kinison appeared uninjured and walked to the side of the road to sit down.
In fact, Sam was severely injured, bleeding internally from a torn aorta and dislocated cervical spine. As he sat dying his friend heard him say to no one in particular "Why now?" Then after a moment, "But why??" Then "Okay, okay, okay", and rolled to his side and passed away.
